oth of us have gone to pot! Ann mainly produces hand built work while most of mine is thrown on the wheel. We mainly use three clay bodies from Potclays of Stoke on Trent.
- 1135 - Red S/E Body
- A plastic blend of various red clays with fireclay. Excellent for general purpose use. A good domestic earthenware body which throws and turns well. It has a wide firing range (1050C - 1170C) and good thermal shock resistance.
- 1141 LT25 - Studio White
- A very plastic white earthenware which throws easily on the wheel. It has a firing range from 1100C to 1220C which enables it to be fired to earthenware or stoneware temperature.
- 1112 - Ivanhoe
- A stoneware body (1130C - 1270C) Good for tiles, slab work, large pieces and Raku. It also throws well. Fires to an attractive toasted colour at the higher temperatures, warm pinkish buff at lower temperatures.
We use a top loading electric kiln for biscuit and glaze firings. Raku firing takes place in a propane fired, home made top hat kiln. We also sawdust fire in a brick built "pit" which doubles as a reduction chamber for large raku pieces and a barbecue!
We both belong to the Midland Potters Association. I am the editor of the MPA newsletter and also maintain their web pages on this site. Just follow the "M.P.A. pages" link below or the links to find out more about our work.
